OZONE

There has been a great deal written about Ozone and the effects it has on the respiratory system.  Just what is Ozone?  Where does it come from?  What can be done to remove this form of pollution from the indoor environment?

Ozone is a bluish gas that has a characteristic pungent odor.  It is known as a powerful oxidant and is used as a bleaching agent and water purifier.  There are many ways this toxic gas is produced ranging from electro brush discharges to copiers and laser printers.  With but a slight energy boost, 3 atoms of Oxygen can bond to form Ozone (O3).  VOC’s and nitrogen dioxide are among the principle contributors to the outdoor formation of Ozone concentrations as well as certain frequencies of ultraviolet light.

Outdoors, Ozone is considered a form of air pollution, a principle cause of lung damage.  The same applies indoors, Ozone is a polluting gas.  It is highly reactive and can cause lung damage and other respiratory problems.  It has also been found to damage the immune system and reduce lung capacities.  Studies show that 20% of healthy individuals are unusually sensitive to Ozone, and if a person is suffering from asthma, bronchitis, or other chronic respiratory disorders, Ozone is extremely aggravating.  These are but a few reasons OSHA has set the exposure limits at 100 ppb and the TWA (time weighted average) is set at .2 mg/m3.
